Folk cúng details for the star
Common mistake:“La Hầu year, so I can’t buy a house.” That’s not what it means. A bad star year is not a ban. It just says be careful: read every page, don’t borrow to the limit, and read the disclosures closely. I’ve seen people wait out a “bad” year, then pay more for the same house the next spring.

How it works
Lunar age (tuổi âm) = year checked − lunar birth year + 1. Born before Tết counts as the year before.
9 stars (Cửu Diệu) rotate every 9 years, in a different order for men and women. Good: Thái Dương, Thái Âm, Mộc Đức. Middling: Thổ Tú, Thủy Diệu, Vân Hán. Be careful: La Hầu, Kế Đô, Thái Bạch.
8 hạn rotate on a separate count. Ages ending in 9 and 0 share the same hạn (for example 49 and 50). All 8 hạn lean “be careful”; they describe what to watch, not what will happen.
Sources disagree on some details: Thiên Tinh (most say be careful, one site calls it lucky), cúng hours and lamp counts. This is folk practice. Many families just cúng once at the start of the year or on the 15th of the 1st lunar month.
