Home worth less than your tax bill says? Ask for Prop 8

Compare your assessed value with what the home would have sold for on January 1. See the yearly saving and the deadline for your county. Numbers below are an example.

Assessed value now$0
Market value on Jan 1$0

Tax saved this year $0
Estimate only. The Assessor sets the value from sales near January 1, not from today's price or a Zestimate. Bond and parcel-tax lines do not change.

Deadlines

The catch: the value comes back

Prop 8 is temporary. Your Prop 13 factored base keeps growing up to 2% a year. When prices recover, the Assessor can raise the value back up to that line, and in those years the jump can be more than 2%.

Common mistake: "Zillow says my home dropped, so my tax drops." The county does not watch Zillow. You file, or nothing happens. And the value that counts is January 1 — a price drop in March helps next year, not this one.
